Research Opportunities

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT (R&D)

The research conducted by R&D informs DEOMI's human relations education and training programs, delivers best practices, programmatic strategies, and advanced technology to tackle complex human relations challenges, and provides a basis for DEOMI to make policy recommendations, all while adding valuable information to the growing body of scientific knowledge. This work is accomplished in several ways with the ultimate goal of increasing total force readiness across the Department of Defense.

R&D provides opportunities for high school, undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral students as well as visiting summer faculty to participate in research at DEOMI.  We benefit greatly from their support as they provide new perspectives to the topics we research daily.  Such topics include equal opportunity/equal employment opportunity, diversity and inclusion, sexual harassment, avatar and other simulation work, and more!

INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS

The DEOMI STEM Internship Program's goal is to encourage high school, college, and graduate level students to enter into STEM-related careers in the Department of Navy (DoN) or the Department of Defense (DoD) once they have completed their education.

The STEM Internship Program consists of two programs sponsored by the Office of Naval Research:

The Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP)

The NREIP is a 10-week, full-time paid research internship program for selected university/college and Master's/Ph-D level graduate students under the guidance of an appropriate mentor. Interns are selected based upon their academic record, personal statements, letters of recommendation, and their career and research interests. Applicants should have majors that are relevant to the research interests of DEOMI as listed in the research areas above.

Apply online at: https://nreip.asee.org/

The Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP)

The SEAP is an 8-week, full-time paid research internship program for selected high school students, who have completed at least Grade 9, under the guidance of an appropriate mentor. Interns are selected based upon their academic record, personal statements, letters of recommendation, and their career and research interests. Applicants should have majors that are relevant to the research interests of DEOMI as listed in the research areas above.

Apply online at: https://seap.asee.org/

DEOMI usually selects between 5 and 7 interns each year. There are several research areas that STEM Interns can focus on that include hazing, bullying, culture, diversity, equal opportunity issues, sexual assault, sexual harassment, gender, race, disability, workplace performance, organizational effectiveness, and toxic leadership, just to name a few. Projects can range from experimental design, data collection and analysis, film creation, solutions and technology development, literature reviews, manuscript development, creating surveys, and more!

FACULTY RESEARCH PROGRAM

Summer Faculty Research Program (SFRP)

The SFRP is an opportunity for science and engineering faculty members from institutions of higher education to participate in research relevant to advance DEOMI's mission. This is a 10-week, full-time paid fellowship appointment to establish and build research relationships with Department of Defense and Department of the Navy laboratories.

Apply online at: https://www.onr.navy.mil

Sabbatical Leave Program

The Sabbatical Leave Program is for senior-level faculty members from institutions of higher education to participate in research relevant to advance DEOMI's mission. Such appointments are for a minimum of one semester to a maximum of one year to establish and build research relationships with Department of Defense and Department of the Navy laboratories.

Apply online at: https://www.onr.navy.mil

For either of these programs, it is highly encouraged that interested applicants contact DEOMI to discuss research interests and ensure education backgrounds are a good fit for both the applicant and DEOMI.

RESEARCH FELLOWS PROGRAM

The Fellows program invites both established researchers and young professors to collaborate with our team through a two-year agreement. DEOMI's unique access to the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute Organizational Climate Survey (DEOCS) and our military trainees allows DEOMI Fellows to ask research questions that are both unique and important, enhancing DEOMI's ability to inform and support DoD leadership, policy, and strategy.

The DEOMI Fellows program was developed to support two key components of DEOMI's mission: to deliver world-class human relations research and innovative solutions to enhance total force readiness. DEOMI strives to publish top tier human relations research that informs our Service Members, DoD leadership, and expands the body of knowledge in the field. Partnering with our Fellows allows DEOMI to increase our research output and academic presence, better support our Service Members, expand our methodology and knowledge in the field of human relations, and to strengthen our relationships with researchers and academic institutions.

Benefits of Becoming a Fellow

Fellows gain access to DEOMI researcher knowledge and expertise, offering unique insight into the US armed services. Through the DEOCS, Fellows get to study large military populations, asking unique questions based on demographics, job type, or experiences. With DEOMI's unique student population Fellows are able to collaborate on research projects that investigate Service Member attitudes, performance, and experiences over time and in a training environment.

Past Fellows
Photo Dr. Rodriguez Lindsey Rodriguez, Ph.D. (University of South Florida, St. Petersburg)
Dr. Rodriguez is working with DEOMI to understand the effects of sexual assault prevention and response perceptions on important unit outcomes. Additionally, Dr. Rodriguez provided DEOMI with valuable research to help in building a Sexual Harassment Prevention Strategy for the DoD.
Photo Dr. Hammond Matt Hammond, Ph.D. (Victoria University of Wellington)
Dr. Hammond is working with DEOMI to optimize training effectiveness in the classroom and the field. His recent work with DEOMI investigates how setting goals and journal-based reflection may improve performance and influence attitudes.
Photo Dr. Elias Nicole M. Elias, Ph.D. (John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York)
Dr. Elias is working in collaboration both with DEOMI and recent DEOMI Summer Faculty Researchers on studies of sex-based discrimination and harassment, including cyber-sexual harassment. Her work is currently supporting the development of the DoD's Sexual Harassment Prevention Strategy.
Photo Dr. Zickar Mike Zickar, Ph.D. (Bowling Green State University)
Dr. Zickar recently collaborated with DEOMI to publish a research article, currently under review, on the relation of Alpha to IRT's Test Information Function. His upcoming research efforts will examine differential item functioning of DEOCS questions in order to evaluate how gender and other demographic attributes may influence Service Members' item interpretation and responses.
Photo Dr. Johnson Lars Johnson, Ph.D. (Wayne State University)
Dr. Johnson's work investigates the role connectedness plays in Service Members' social behavior and cognitive engagement. While collaborating with DEOMI, his work will reveal how demographics, such as ethnicity, may affect these relationships.

How to Apply

Our first Fellows were handpicked based on their expertise and research goals. In the future, Fellows will apply to our program and be selected based on their match with DEOMI's mission, their research and publication history, and their expertise.
